"On completing his thirty-first year as President of Whitman College, Walla Walla, Dr. Stephen B.L. Penrose tendered his resignation on account of the loss of eyesight… But he is by no means through with his beloved task. The Board of Overseers refused to accept his resignation. They voted to retain him as President for work within the College and to give him an assistant for the important activities in outside fields."
