Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

 

Author Guidelines

Clio's Purple and Gold publishes undergraduate history papers prepared in a UW class or independent research within the past year. Please keep papers between five and fifty pages, excluding bibliographies and abstracts, formatted according to the following guidelines:

  • Chicago Style Citations
  • Footnotes rather than endnotes
  • 12 pt font, Times New Roman
  • 1 inch margins
  • Double spaced
  • Please include a cover page with title and name
Additionally, please provide an abstract of no more than one page briefly describing the topic and argument of the paper; indicating if it is part of a larger research project (if so, please outline the general shape of the project so the excerpt is comprehensible); and, if relevant, explaining why you undertook the research.

 

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; ; has 1 inch margins
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  5. A one-page abstract has been provided with the paper according to the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

    1. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.

    1. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.

  1. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
