"At the fortieth annual meeting of the American Historical Association, held at Ann Arbor, Michigan, December 29-31, 1925, renewed effort was placed upon the national desire to raise among the members an endowment fund of half a million dollars… The main object of securing the endowment is to enable the Association to 'assume a new and much needed leadership in the promotion of research and publication.'"
