Abstract

"Arriving on Tualatin Plains in 1840 Newell was active in the preliminaries as well as the actual formation of the Provisional Government, and was chosen to its legislature at practically every election prior to the organization of the Territory by Governor Lane... [He] was a Mountain Man, a term indicative of unusual courage, endurance, sagacity and, in the case of Newell, horse-sense."
