"Although the time was brief, about two weeks in October and November, 1859, the little United States Propeller Massachusetts attained great dignity as 'Headquarters of the Army.' The captain of the boat in that crisis of her history ought to be remembered and yet he is probably not mentioned in a single one of the many accounts of the stirring international events in which the steamer had an important part.
