"One of the earliest landmarks in the history of the Pacific Northwest recently received an appropriate monument at the hands of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, which was dedicated on August 26, 1927. The inscription included: 'Alexander Mackenzie from Canada by land, July 22nd, 1793.' The great explorer had painted those words on a rock at the end of his memorable journey from Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabaska by way of Peace River and other streams to the Pacific Ocean."
