Abstract

"'It is not too much to say that the Trans-Mississippi history during the past century was shaped if not controlled by the Missouri River,' and Fort Benton at the head of this mighty avenue of approach to the West quickened and grew as the stream of immigration poured through it. Few towns, perhaps none the size of this one, have played so important a part in the development of the West."
