Author Guidelines

Articles

Slovene Studies publishes articles about Slovene culture, history, language, politics, society, etc. Over the past four decades, its contents have been evenly divided between the humanities and social sciences. The journal has on occasion published short translations (see below) and excerpts from memoirs. The language of publication is English (spelling and punctuation in American English); authors should assure their manuscripts do not require extensive copy editing.

Manuscript submissions should be in 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spaced with 1-inch margins on all sides. Normally, articles should be of no more than 8,000 words. Authors should follow the Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.) author-date reference style, including full first names in citations. (Newspaper articles and internet sources should be cited in footnotes.) The list of works cited at the end of the submission should contain only references that are cited in the text. Explanatory footnotes are acceptable. If an explanatory footnote cites a source, it should follow the author-date reference style as well. Authors are responsible for obtaining the rights to any copyrighted material included in an article.

The placement of figures in a different format (e.g., a jpeg image) should be noted in the text and caption supplied. Any such figures should be uploaded in separate files and named figure 1,” “figure 2,” and so forth.

Quotations from languages other than English should be translated. When quoting creative works and texts in which language is crucial (i.e., not secondary sources), the original language is footnoted, and the translator indicated in the footnote. If there are multiple translations and one translator, the translator is indicated only in the first note. If the original uses a non-Latin alphabet, then that alphabet is used in the footnote. Word translations can follow the translated word directly in straight quotation marks—e.g., revija 'journal'—when a word is the focus. Very short translations can come in parentheses after the original—e.g., Jutri je nov dan” (Tomorrow is a new day”).

Submissions should be free of any information that reveals the authors identity. In Word documents, this is usually done by going to File > Info > Check for Issues > Inspect Document. Uncheck all boxes except Document Properties and Personal Information. Then choose Inspect and proceed to remove all information about the author(s). In Word on Apple computers, this is done by going to Tools > Protect Document > Remove personal information.

Research notes

Notes on unique research projects or innovative methods or approaches can be published in the journal. They may contain preliminary results that have not been published elsewhere. Research notes must document the novelty or innovation of research that has begun or been planned and funded.

Translations

The journal occasionally publishes literary translations from Slovene into English. Translations are usually complemented by a thematic essay or article, article on translation, or similar publication. Please contact the editor before submitting a translation.

Memoirs

Slovene Studies has published memoirs or excerpts from memoirs of relevance to disciplines represented in the journal. If a memoir is not the author’s own, he or she must present permission(s) to publish it.

Book Reviews

Book reviews should be between 1,000 and 2,000 words. Citations in the text should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Explanatory footnotes are acceptable.
